Bangkok, the city where our love story began! It’s a place that holds a special corner in our hearts. After living in this vibrant metropolis, we’ve returned time and time again. Last summer, our South-East Asia summer adventure kicked off and wrapped up right here in Bangkok and we wanted to share some of our highlights and top tips with you! Before you head off on your own Bangkok adventure, be sure to check out some of our ideas.
From navigating the labyrinth of Chinatown to cycling through the “Green Lung,” our family’s adventure in Bangkok was unforgettable. Read on to learn more about our adventure as we delve into the bustling streets, vibrant markets, and serene oases of Bangkok, the lively capital city of Thailand.
Chinatown Markets: A Feast for the Senses
Our Bangkok adventure began in the heart of Bangkok’s Chinatown, a bustling maze of narrow streets and bustling markets. We wandered through vibrant alleyways lined with colourful stalls selling everything from exotic fruits and spices to traditional crafts and souvenirs. Our senses were overwhelmed as we immersed ourselves in the vibrant energy and rich culture of this bustling neighbourhood.
Chinatown in Bangkok covers a large area however we find the main shopping ‘streets’ around Sampheng Market are the best for this type of experience. Our kids loved the experience and came away with a lot of souvenirs!
Chatuchak Market: A Shopper’s Paradise
No visit to Bangkok is complete without a trip to Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the largest outdoor markets in the world. With over 8,000 stalls, this sprawling market offers everything from clothing and accessories to home decor, handicrafts, and exotic pets. We spent hours exploring, haggling with vendors, and sampling delicious street food. From quirky souvenirs to unique treasures, Chatuchak Market truly has something for everyone. This photo was taken at Viva 8, our favourite ‘refreshment’ stop!
Canal Boat Tour: Navigating Bangkok’s Waterways
Hands down one of our favourite things to do in Bangkok! To escape the hustle and bustle of the city streets, we embarked on a serene canal boat tour, exploring Bangkok’s intricate network of waterways. These tours provide the opportunity to glide past colourful wooden houses, ornate temples, and lush greenery, providing a new perspective on the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Other small boats will pull up to sell little souvenirs and refreshments (including a much-needed cold beer!) These tours are always a peaceful journey that provide a refreshing contrast to the bustling streets of Bangkok.
Tours can be booked online however we always head down to the pier at Saphan Taksin (Satorn Ferry Terminal) where boat owners and operators tout their tours.
Cycling on the Green Lung: A Breath of Fresh Air
For a taste of Bangkok’s natural beauty, we ventured to Bang Krachao, also known as the “Green Lung” of Bangkok. This lush oasis of mangrove forests, winding waterways, and verdant parks is a peaceful escape from the city’s urban sprawl. We rented bicycles and set off to explore the island’s network of shady pathways and scenic trails. Along the way, we encountered friendly locals, picturesque villages, and hidden temples tucked away amid the greenery. Cycling through the Green Lung was a refreshing and rejuvenating experience that allowed us to connect with nature in the heart of the city.
To reach the ‘Green Lung’ we caught the ferry from Khlong Toey pier. On the other side, you can rent a bike and explore away!
Exploring Lumpini Park: Serenity in the City
Our adventure in Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Lumpini Park, the city’s largest and most famous green space. We strolled along winding paths, shaded by towering trees and lush tropical foliage, spotting monitor lizards basking in the sun and colourful birds flitting among the branches.
Our family arrived at Lumpini from Betchakitti Park and used the fantastic new elevated walkways that connect the park and lake to Lumpini Park. It was a sweaty walk for sure, but a gorgeous part of the city with fantastic views.
This area used to be an old tobacco factory and lay derelict for years. The new land and park area that has been reclaimed is brilliant news for the city.
Our family’s adventure in Bangkok was a whirlwind of excitement, culture, and natural beauty. From exploring bustling markets and navigating waterways to cycling through green oases and relaxing in tranquil parks, we discovered the diverse and dynamic soul of this vibrant city. Bangkok truly offers something for everyone, including families with children of all ages, and we can’t wait to return and continue our exploration of this enchanting metropolis.
