Hiking the Path of the Gods in Italy

Hey there, fellow adventurers! If you’re like us and love hitting the trails but find yourself hesitating because you have little ones in tow, fear not! Hiking with kids can be an incredibly rewarding experience for the whole family. With a bit of preparation and a whole lot of patience, you’ll be amazed at the wonders you can discover together in the great outdoors. So lace up those hiking boots, grab your little ones by the hand, and let’s dive into our top tips for hiking with young kids!

Start Small

When it comes to hiking with young children, it’s essential to start small and choose trails that are suitable for little legs. Opt for shorter, easier routes with minimal elevation gain to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone. As your kids gain confidence and stamina, you can gradually increase the length and difficulty of your hikes. We’ve recently discovered the Wikiloc App which is a good way to search for trails in your chosen area and get some inspiration!

Pack Wisely

Be sure to pack all the essentials for a successful hike with kids. This includes plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a first aid kit, and any necessary clothing layers for changing weather conditions. Consider bringing along a small backpack for each child so they can carry their own water bottle or snacks, helping them feel like active participants in the adventure. Top Tip – Pack them light as based on experience, we sometimes end up carrying them (or one of the rascals!)

Dress for Success

Dress your little ones in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Layers are key, especially if you’re hiking in areas with fluctuating temperatures. Don’t forget hats and sunglasses to protect against the sun, as well as lightweight rain jackets in case of unexpected showers.

Plan for Play

Kids have boundless energy and curiosity, so be sure to plan for plenty of breaks along the trail for exploration and play. Encourage them to examine interesting rocks, search for wildlife, and listen to the sounds of nature. Bringing along a magnifying glass or binoculars can add an extra element of excitement to the adventure. One littlest rascal enjoys drawing arrows for the rest of us to find…she feels like she’s leading the way!

Embrace the Snail’s Pace

When hiking with young children, it’s important to adjust your expectations and embrace a slower pace. Allow plenty of time for frequent rest stops and take breaks as needed. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination, so savour each moment and enjoy the opportunity to connect with nature as a family.

Safety First

Prioritise safety at all times when hiking with kids. Stay on designated trails, keep a close eye on your children, and teach them about potential hazards such as steep drop-offs or slippery rocks. Consider using child carriers or hiking backpacks for younger children who may tire easily or have difficulty navigating rough terrain. We used a few of these over the years (including an old Karrimor metal frame carrier from Grandad which was used to carry Amy around when she was little!). One of the better ones on the market at the moment is Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier.

Make it Fun

Above all, make hiking with kids a fun and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Play games, sing songs, and encourage your children to use their imaginations as they explore the natural world around them. Capture memories with photos and videos to cherish for years to come, and celebrate each milestone along the way.

Remember, hiking with kids may have its challenges, but the rewards far outweigh any obstacles you may encounter along the trail. By following these tips and embracing the spirit of adventure, you’ll create lasting memories and instil a love of nature in your little ones that will last a lifetime. So get out there and hit the trails – the world is waiting to be explored!

Happy hiking!
